The Excretion of 4-hydroxy-3-methoxy-mandelic Acid by Children.

چکیده
Much interest has been shown recently in the urinary excretion of 4-hydroxy-3-methoxy-mandelic acid (HMMA, but also known as VMA). It is accepted that its estimation may assist in the diagnosis of neuroblastoma and phaeochromocytoma, the high excretion usually found with these tumours being well above that possibly due to dietary constitutents, the stress of hospital admission, or recent operation. While most workers in describing methods or investigating clinical groups have included small numbers of normal subjects in order to define normal values of excretion, there have been no systematic studies of the excretion pattern in childhood. This paper records a study of 24-hour HMMA excretion in 132 normal children and in several small groups of children suffering from conditions that have been suspected of raising excretion rates ofHMMA. In the series of children with proven neuroblastoma, as in those of most other workers, there are a few with normal HMMA excretion. Some of the non-pathological factors that might influence HMMA excretion have also been studied. Subjects and Methods The following children provided 24-hour specimens of urine:

Excretion of 4-hydroxy-3 methoxy mandelic acid in cases of ulcerative colitis and diarrhoea of nervous origin.
Urinary excretion of 4-hydroxy-3 methoxy mandelic acid (VMA) was used as an index of catecholamine activity in 59 cases of ulcerative colitis compared with 59 controls and 18 cases of diarrhoea of nervous origin. No significant differences were observed between cases and controls but the level of VMA excretion was raised in nervous diarrhoea.
متن کاملThe determination of 3-methoxy 4-hydroxy mandelic acid in urine.
A simple and accurate method for determining 3-methoxy 4-hydroxy mandelic acid in urine is described. The amounts excreted in urine in 24 hours by nine normal subjects and three patients with phaeochromocytoma have been determined.
متن کاملUrinary Excretion of Metabolites of Catecholamines in Normal Individuals and Hypertensive Patients.
The 24-hour urinary output of 3-methoxy-4-hydroxy mandelic acid (V.M.A.) has been determined in 20 normal adults, 150 hypertensive patients, and four cases of phaeochromocytoma. In this last group estimations of urinary catecholamines and total urinary methylated amines were also performed and the overall results have been compared with the urinary excretory pattern of catecholamines and their ...
متن کاملA screening test for phaeochromocytoma.
Patients suffering from phaeochromocytomata excrete many times the normal amount of noradrenaline in the urine (Euler, 1951). Determination of the excretion of noradrenaline in thu urine over 24 hours is thus a valuable aid to the diagnosis of this condition. Few clinical laboratories, however, have the facilities for noradrenaline assay, and there is a need for a simple, reliable, and fairly r...
متن کاملBiochemical diagnosis of phaeochromocytoma: two instructive case reports.
The biochemical features of two patients with phaeochromocytomas illustrate the inadvisability of depending on a single group of analytes for the diagnosis. The first case presented as a surgical emergency with retroperitoneal haemorrhage. Biochemical diagnosis was difficult since total 24 hour urinary free catecholamine excretion was within normal limits in two out of three samples, and only m...
